An update on the international design team selection process

The number 72 written in graffiti on a wall in North Kensington

Following the launch of our international design team selection process in July of this year, we received very strong applications from 28 multi-disciplinary teams, featuring architects, landscape architects and community engagement specialists, among other disciplines.

Due to the thoroughness of the submissions, and the robust approach we have taken to evaluating and moderating those submissions, a little more time is needed to reach the shortlist than previously anticipated. We expect to complete the moderation and to be able to notify shortlisted teams very soon.

A thorough approach to due diligence is a vital part of selecting anyone who will be involved with the Grenfell memorial. This approach will provide reassurance that any team, organisation or individuals working with the Commission does not bear any potential responsibility for the tragedy. Due diligence is being carried out in two stages and you can find further information about that on page 16 of the 'High-level descriptive document' on our website.

We have said all along that community involvement is an integral part of the memorial design team selection process. It is essential that the community has the opportunity to engage with the shortlisted teams during phase 2 of that process. We will write to the Grenfell community early in the new year with further details, including:

  • how you can learn more about the shortlisted design teams
  • how the shortlisted teams would approach the hugely important task of working with the community to design and develop the future memorial to our loved ones

Understanding your views, prior to the final team being selected, will be essential.
