Before we can publish our final report, we would now like to hear how bereaved families, survivors and local residents think the memorial should be owned, how it should be looked after, and whether parts of Grenfell Tower and items from the site should be included in the future memorial.
Why is this important?
Many have told us that how the memorial will be owned and maintained in the future is vital. Getting this right will help make sure that what happened at Grenfell is never forgotten. While some families have asked us to explore if elements of the Tower could be included as part of the final design, other families have told us how sensitive this is to them. We are also keen to hear your views on this.
How could the memorial be owned and maintained?
Probably the most important question to ask here is, what is important to you? Some people have told us that ensuring ownership is independent of government is really important, others have said it is important that bereaved families remain involved in long-term ownership and maintenance decisions. What we do know is that the government has promised that it will transfer ownership of the Grenfell Tower site to a community-selected body once it has been prepared for future use. The plan is that the land, and whatever is on it, is legally owned in a way that means the memorial is properly maintained and protected for generations to come. We will more share details on possible ownership options in the coming months, including at our monthly drop-ins and on our website.
