Appointing a design team is a vital step in turning the Grenfell community’s vision for a future memorial into a physical reality. We are also all too aware of the importance of appointing the right team. A team that that the community can be involved in selecting, and which will work professionally, sensitively and thoughtfully with this community. We are pleased to have brought in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to oversee this design team selection process for us. (Further commercial details can be found in this contract notice.)
We have published clear criteria that potential design teams will need to meet, and which include being able to demonstrate a range of specialist skills – such as architecture, engineering and landscape design – as well as robust experience of working collaboratively with communities. You can read more about this here or in the 'International design team selection process: Phase 1 design brief' at the end of this page.
A thorough approach to due diligence is a vital part of selecting anyone who will be involved with the Grenfell memorial, to provide reassurance that any team, organisation or individuals working with the Commission do not bear any potential responsibility for the tragedy. Due diligence will take place in two stages and you can find further information about this on page 16 of the 'High-level descriptive document' below.
An update on Phase 1 of the process following the the submissions from design teams by the 25 September deadline, is available here.
